In second grade, students have learned to read basic rhythms. To take this skill a step up, students are divided into two group and perform complementary lines of music.
Students took a rhythmic poem about a ship at sea and added instruments to create a musical experience. What happened to the ship? No one knows!
Using scarves, students their partners in movement to the piece "Tortoises" by Saint-Saens. Students are showing tempo, style, and phrasing through through their movements. Also, students are discovering how to mirror movements that they see.
Through movement, the kindergarten classes show how the song "Yankee Doodle" is in AB form.
In first grade, we explored how Haydn used dynamics in order to wake up royalty during a concert in the "Surprise Symphony".
Students from Mrs. Powell's 2nd grade class are reading rhythm cards with quarter and eighth notes (clapping) and quarter rests (tapping their heads). Within their groups of three, students read and check each others' counting while counting various patterns. The did a great job!
To add movement and excitement to our class, our Kindergarten students imagined they were on an frozen lake, ice skating. Our students enjoyed moving to the music while wearing their "skates".
Through movement, the Kindergarten students are able to interpret what they are hearing: AABA form. Students are moving on the A portion of the piece, where the piano has higher notes, and students pause on the B portion, where the piano plays in a lower register. Students may not be able to explain what they hear, but they are able to show what they are hearing through movement.
